Elevate Your Trajectory
The Travel Advisor Guide to Host Agencies
Let’s cut through the turbulence: most host agencies treat advisors like passive subscription fees, not real business partners.
When you’re looking for a runway to get your travel business off the ground, not every control tower will clear the way for you. If a host agency makes their profit before you ever book a single trip, how invested are they really in helping you reach cruising altitude?
At Altitude by Travel Connections, we do things differently. We’ve spent nearly three decades building top-tier supplier relationships and a collaborative crew. Here is the direct truth about how host agencies actually work—and why our model is engineered to give you a clear flight path to long-term success.
1. 90% of $0 = $0
The Pitch:"Join us for a fee and keep 90% of your commission from Day 1!" or “Pay $x = 60/40, $xx = 70/30, $xxx = 80/20, $xxxx = 90/10”
The Reality Check
Not all commission splits are created equal—and if an agency isn’t actively investing in your development, they shouldn’t be profiting off your hard work.
If a host agency offers high commission splits at onboarding (without you bringing an established book of business), they’re not invested in your success. A 90/10 split sounds incredibly enticing, but hear me out: 90% of $0 is still $0.
Many mega-host agencies do not care if you ever make a single booking. Like most MLMs, their business model is built to profit from their fees. Any commission you happen to bring in is just ‘complimentary champagne’ for them. When a new advisor struggles to get off the ground, these hosts simply re-route—claiming they "provided all the best equipment" and blaming your piloting for your lack of lift.
The Costly Upgrade Bundle
Another no-fly zone? Host agencies that force advisors to "invest" higher fees just to unlock better splits. If you are paying First-Class tier fees, you should be receiving premium support, dedicated coaching, and superior tools and resources that Economy advisors cannot access—not just permission to keep more of your own money.
Let's look at the math on a $5,000 package booked with a supplier paying a 15% base commission ($750 total commission pool):
60/40 Split: You earn $450
90/10 Split: You earn $675
A $225 difference sounds great—until you realize how much that “First-Class” commission tier cost you.
The Final Pre-Boarding Check
The final step before (on)boarding? A host agency's overall commission tier with travel suppliers. Hosts profiting off of fees often overlook negotiating for top-tier supplier commissions.
Imagine you book that same $5,000 trip under two different agencies, both giving you a 70/30 split:
Agency #1 (Bottom-Tier Supplier Rate @ 10%): Total pool = $500. You make $350.
Agency #2 (Top-Tier Supplier Rate @ 15%): Total pool = $750. You make $525.
You make $175 more with Agency #2 for the exact same booking at the exact same split! In fact, you could be on a 60/40 split with Agency #2 and still make more money ($450) than a 70/30 split at Agency #1 ($350).
Pro Tip: Not all travel suppliers use tiered agency commissions. If you plan to specialize in a specific supplier, always ask every host you’re interviewing what commission tier they hold with that specific supplier, because supplier commissions matter as much as your split.
At Altitude, You Are an Essential Crew Member
We don't profit off of massive overhead fees—we only win when you win. Our production-driven model invests heavily into you at the start. As your sales volume climbs, your split automatically increases—giving you First-Class earning potential on an Economy financial investment, because we believe in letting you soar.
2. The E&O Insurance Inclusion
The Pitch: "Your registration fees include Errors & Omissions (E&O) insurance coverage under our company policy!"
The Reality Check:
This is one of the single biggest operational risks in the travel space today. Errors & Omissions insurance legally covers W-2 employees of the policyholder. As an Independent Contractor (1099), relying on a host's policy leaves you cruising without a life preserver.
Even if a host claims you're covered, they hold the flight controls. If a client situation threatens their agency's claims record or renewal rates, hosts can—and do—refuse to file the claim. In that scenario, you have zero control and zero protection.
Even worse? Aggregate policy limits. If another advisor on the host's policy has a major claim that exhausts the agency's benefits for the year, your claim could be denied entirely—leaving you stranded with no oxygen mask, just because they got to it first.
How We Protect Our Crew:
Real Autonomy: We require our advisors to hold their own independent E&O policy. You control the policy, the coverage limits, and the claims.
No Risk, No Overhead: You aren't required to carry E&O until you make your first booking (no bookings = no risk). Premiums are calculated on your individual sales volume, making it remarkably affordable for new advisors getting off the ground.
Tailored Coverage: We guide you toward travel-specific underwriters that cover the real, complex realities of travel advising—not just generic office advice from standard business policies.
3. Real Mentorship v. A "Self-Help Library"
The Pitch:"Access our portal of 500+ pre-recorded video modules!"
The Reality Check:
Self-paced libraries are fine for surface-level information, but does the host agency actually staff their flight program with a live instructor?
Most mega-hosts put you in the cockpit with a user manual and wish you luck. You aren't getting hands-on training—you’re getting a cost-efficient simulator.
The Altitude Support Infrastructure:
Instructors & Co-Pilots: You get direct access to agency leadership for real-time strategy, troubleshooting, and business guidance. We operate as a collaborative crew, not a ticket-system help desk.
Flight Path Onboarding: A guided, step-by-step onboarding system designed to get your business off the ground quickly without feeling overwhelmed. The Connection Lounge: Immediate entry into our private mastermind community, plus monthly Flight Plan webinars to keep you at the top of your game (and in friendly competition with your wingmen).
BDM & Supplier Access: Unlock elite training programs and direct access to destination specialists and Business Development Managers (BDMs) from Day 1. (And if you already have established BDM relationships, bring them with you—we welcome the extra flight power!)
4. Client Ownership v. The Host Hostage Trap
The Pitch:
"Registration includes access to our exclusive, proprietary CRM to manage your client database!"
The Reality Check:
Proprietary host systems sound sleek until you decide to change flight plans. Most mega-hosts build their own internal CRMs for one reason: client lock-in.
If you ever decide to leave, your client database stays locked inside their hangar. They treat your hard-earned network as "agency property," forcing you to start completely from scratch or walk away from years of client history. They basically hold your passenger manifest hostage.
We believe travel is fundamentally a relationship business. You did the networking, built the trust, and earned those clients—those relationships belong to you, not a host agency.
Why We Chose Tern Instead
Instead of trapping you in a closed system, your $300 annual agency fee directly funds your dedicated seat in Tern—the industry’s gold-standard, all-in-one CRM and itinerary builder.
Why Tern: We believe Tern is the most versatile platform on the market. It gives you access to modern itinerary building, client-facing mobile authorization apps, automated workflows, AI assistance, email and calendar integrations, a robust library of intake forms to capture leads, and commission tracking right out of the gate. We are travel experts, not software developers—using an elite third-party solution means you get industry-leading tools, without the mega-host trap.
Portable Passenger Manifest: Because Tern is an independent, top-tier third-party CRM, your data remains your property. If you ever decide to move on from our crew, your client database and Tern account go right along with you (as long as you pick up the direct Tern software fee).
Clear Flight Rules: Active bookings associated with our agency’s IATA credentials stay with us to be managed through completion, but the human connections—your clients—remain 100% yours. Always.
Pro Tip: Want to take it for a test flight? Click to sign up for a free trial: Tern. Just be sure to cancel before the trial converts to a paid subscription.
5. Transparent Pre-Flight Checklist
The Pitch:
"Pay our $1,200 onboarding fee and we'll give you everything you need to start your business!"
The Reality Check:
Host agencies love justifying their fees with inflated tech tools, generic marketing templates, and massive self-paced libraries—just to find out you still have to pay $12 for a can of domestic beer after you take flight.
At Altitude by Travel Connections, our success is directly correlated to yours. Here is a transparent look at what running your business actually requires:
1. The Essentials (What You Provide)
Tech Basics: A phone, a computer, and high-speed internet. Standard operational expenses you almost certainly already incur in daily life.
2. Marketing Without the Money Pit
Digital Networking: Paper business cards are practically extinct. We recommend setting up a digital card in your Apple or Google Wallet using Blinq (free setup), paired with an NFC tap-to-connect device off Amazon (available under $20). It’s modern, high-tech, and unforgettable to clients.
Content & Graphics: Paid tools like Canva Pro and Later are great, but there are endless free tools to start. Even better? Our travel supplier partners provide massive, world-class libraries of free, customizable marketing materials, photos, and videos because when you sell, they win!
Websites & Domains: You can pay for a custom domain and standalone website, but as a brand-new advisor, expect delays before take-off. If we were starting fresh today, we’d grab a free Linktree landing page to direct clients straight to your contact info and Tern intake forms.
